Data Planet Statistical Datasets: Finding and Selecting Data

Learn more about the statistical datasets and sources available in Data Planet.

Selecting Data

There are multiple ways to find data. From the home page, select one of the options pointed out in the image below:

Selecting the Datasets link in the top menu of the home page, and the Browse by Subject or Source options all follow a similar navigation to land on a dataset of interest. For example, after selecting the Datasets link in the top menu of the home page, the following pathway opens:

1. A listing of the Browse by Subject options display

2. After selecting an area of interest, here, Education, a listing of databases appears that have statistics related to education.

3. After selecting a database of interest, here Applications and Admittances - Postsecondary Institutions displays a listing of datasets within this database.

From the listing of datasets, select one of interest, and presto - a chart opens to the right:

Using the Search Box

Use the search box in the Data Planet header to query the repository for topics of interest. In the example below, "Brazil" is entered into the search box.

After you run the search, a listing of results opens. Scroll the results to select a dataset of interest, which will return you to that specific data and chart. You can also filter results to the left of the results listing to narrow results by subject terms, source, database, and geography.

Citations and Details about the Data

Descriptive information about the statistical indicator(s) selected and the datasets from which they are drawn appear on the screen directly below the visualization. The statistical abstract includes:

  • Broad Category(ies): Each indicator and dataset are classified in one or two of 16 broad subject areas.
  • Subject Terms: Each indicator is assigned subject terms from the Data Planet controlled vocabulary of indexing terminology.
  • Source: The name of the data provider, with a description of the organization.
  • Dataset: The name of the dataset, followed by an abstract describing the dataset.
  • Technical documentation: A link to technical information on the dataset, as provided by the data source.
  • Citation: Presents the preferred citation format for the data visualization and description.
  • DOI or Option to Create DOI: DOIs, or Digital Object Identifiers, are used to identify content objects in the digital environment. They provide an actionable, interoperable, persistent link of an object, which can be any entity (thing: physical, digital, or abstract). DOIs make it possible to retrieve an exact replica of the statistical abstract, including the data visualization, at the time the DOI was created. This DOI should be included with the Citation.  For more on DOIs, click here.
