Minnesota was admitted to the United States in 1858. Previously the area had been under the jurisdiction of four nations: France, Spain, Great Britain, and the US, and under nine territories: Northwest, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. The state grain is wild rice and the state drink is milk. It is the 12th largest state with over 84,000 square miles and has over 15,000 lakes that are larger than 10 acres.
