Data Visualization Embeds Now Live on Data Planet!

by Data Planet ™ on 2019-10-30T14:20:21-04:00 in About Data Planet | Comments

With this feature release, Data Planet users can create interactive embeds of Data Planet content that can be added to your web application – a website, a LibGuide, a WordPress blog - to enrich and enliven your own content! Embeddable data visualizations, available via the export menu in the Data Planet data viewer, are available for all chart types in Data Planet, which include trends, rankings, pie charts, and maps. The embed feature is available for all non-rights restricted content (for any restricted content, the embed option will not appear in the Export drop-down menu). Here's a sample:

Hover over the elements in the visualization to have a look at the many interactive elements available, including:

  • Data at a glance: Users are able to hover over the data visualization to quickly and easily see specific data points within the embed.
  • Timeline updates: To see different timeframes, users can simply click and drag their mouse over the data visualization to refine or expand their dates. Additionally, users can change the timeframe of the embed by clicking the “Timeframe” option in the upper right corner of the window. From here, users will either see a drop down menu of choices or have the ability to enter specific dates using the date range widget.
  • Delving into the data: Clicking “Table” will give users access to the raw data that underlies the embed visualization.
  • Take the infographic and/or the data and run!: A full menu of export options is available to users, including the ability to download the data in Excel, PDF, Delimited Text, SAS, XML and PowerPoint formats.
  • Citation, Citation, Citation: All citation format export options that are available on the Data Planet platform are also available within the data embeds: DataCite, APA, Chicago, MLA, RefWorks, EndNote Web, EndNote Local, and Zotero.

The embeds contain the full source information for the underlying data, including a direct link back to the data source, as well as an expandable menu detailing the source, dataset, and citation information. Clicking on the “Data Planet” logo within an embed will take authorized (and authenticated) Data Planet users directly back to the dataset within the Data Planet interface, allowing them to further investigate and manipulate the data as they choose!

We have also added a capability for embed creators to choose “static” or “dynamic” embeds. Both options have the interactive elements described above.

Static embeds: Data within the embed remains the same as at the time the embed code was generated. Please note, static embeds still allow users to interact with the data, changing the timeframe to expand or refine the results; however, the data contained within the static embed will not change if it is updated or recast on the Data Planet website.

Dynamic embeds: The embed will update with new data as it is added to Data Planet – meaning your web application stays current with newly available or recast data.

Quickly create an Embed by selecting Embed from the Export menu when logged into Data Planet:

A dialog box appears in the upper right of the interface. Select Dynamic or Static, and click on Create Embed Code:

Embed the HTML code generated into your website’s page source and publish!
