DataCite Open Access

Both EDS and Summon harvest metadata via DataCite, listed as an "Open Access" source in content lists. Data Planet registers DOIs with DataCite so it may be that metadata records for Data Planet DataSheets (views that include charts and descriptive metadata) are being surfaced in discovery searches at your institution. These records are distinguished by Source = "DataCite" in the metadata record. Institutions that subscribe to Data Planet should adjust their configuration settings for these records so that users are aware that Online Access is available. Contact your discovery service provider for assistance.

Tips for Maximizing Discoverability in the Discovery Services

√  Be sure you have selected Data Planet Statistical Datasets in the discovery service configuration tool. If you do not find Data Planet Statistical Datasets in the discovery partner's knowledge base, contact the discovery service provider’s support team.

√  Consider making Data Planet Statistical Datasets part of the discovery service default set searched every time a search is executed.

√  Confirm that linking is set up as properly. Test the path of linking from the Data Planet records surface in discovery services searches to confirm that the access path resolves properly.

√  Customize the installation. Do some searches using the discovery interface to understand where Data Planet resources are appearing in the results. Some tweaks in the administrative settings may help optimize the display.

√  Be sure to check your Data Planet usage reports before and after implementation of discovery services. We would expect higher usage of the database following implementation; if this does not occur, it may be evidence of technical or administrative issues that need to be addressed.
