Explore the Data Planet repository for statistics on Minnesota by broad subject categories.

Minnesota was admitted to the United States in 1858. Previously the area had been under the jurisdiction of four nations: France, Spain, Great Britain, and the US, and under nine territories: Northwest, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. The state grain is wild rice and the state drink is milk. It is the 12th largest state with over 84,000 square miles and has over 15,000 lakes that are larger than 10 acres.

This information was drawn from the websites of the Secretary of State and Library of the Minnesota Historical Society, both of which provide more detail on Minnesota history and facts.
