Criminal Justice Statistics: U.S.: Overview

Guide to criminal justice datasets available in Data Planet.

U.S. Criminal Justice Statistics

The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program has been the starting place for law enforcement executives, students of criminal justice, researchers, members of the media, and the public at large seeking information on crime in the nation. The program was conceived in 1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to meet the need for reliable uniform crime statistics for the nation. In 1930, the FBI was tasked with collecting, publishing, and archiving those statistics.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics also collects and disseminates statistics on the criminal justice system of the United States.

In this guide, you will learn more about the statistics from these programs available in Data Planet.

Be aware that there are privacy issues related to the dissemination of this data and the data releases may also be quite latent, both factors that need to be taken into account in using the data. *

Browsing Datasets in Data Planet

There are numerous ways to explore datasets on criminal justice in Data Planet. In this section, we'll guide you through two ways:

Starting from the Homepage

Browse by Subject
Screen grab of the homepage of Data Planet, featuring the Browse by Subject area and highlighting the subject called, "Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement."
Browse by Source

You can also browse by source—click on the "Source" tab in the middle to begin. Then you can either filter down to a specific source by letter (as pictured below), by clicking on the letter "F." Almost instantly you'll see the list of sources narrowed down to those that begin with the letter "F" and lo and behold, "Federal Bureau of Investigation" is right there!

Another way to browse by source is by typing the source name directly into the textbox provided (appears below the filter-by-letter feature).

Starting from the Datasets Page

Browse by Source

Similar to browsing by subject on the Datasets page, you can also browse by source in the same way!
